Instructor Bio:

Lucas J Copplestone was born an Artist but it all hit on an adventure to London England in 2008 with his Dad, they explored all the same museums, monuments, architecture and pubs they had on previous trips, however; this trip sat differently with Lucas. Returning with fresh eyes, he began painting very large abstract and Pop Art style portraits. A few months later held his first art show on the industrial side of Sidney, “Rhythmic Vibrations of Sound & Colour”, where he sold 14 pieces of art and took orders for custom portraits.

Creating out of his home, Lucas started to explore different mediums and took a great interest in the screenprinting process. Inspired by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and other Pop Artists, he took a trip to a screenprinting convention in California. He returned with a printing press capable of printing on textiles, wood, canvas and other various mediums. He started his own business printing creative apparel for various businesses, artists, bands and his own art works.

This creative path has lead Lucas to countless opportunities, adventures and creative relationships. Working with charities and donating pieces for auction to The Zajac Ranch for kids, Painting Eagles in the city for BC Children’s Charity’s, WE DAY celebrations and other local foundations, his ART has raised over $30,000. This speaks to the community about the importance of the creative arts.

Over the last ten years Lucas has been creating, singing, dancing, DJing and traveling with a special group of creative people. In 2012 this group came together to find a space where everyone could explore their best creative self. They would meet at each others spaces but were running out of room. They began to strive towards having their community collaborating simultaneously under one roof.

In 2016 after years of dreaming and scheming they came together to purchase the old McTavish Elementary, an 18,000 square foot facility on 4.5 acres of land, in North Saanich. Renaming it The McTavish Academy of Art, they are offering programs and workshops in art, dance, yoga and nutrition as well as providing gallery and event space for the community. It has quickly become space for everyone to connect with their best creative self. This group has also created a non-profit Art For Everyone that will fund community arts and music programming for those without access to creative outlets.
