The Iyengar Method of yoga is characterized by an alert practice, precise direction, alignment and depth. Emphasis is placed on meditation in action in the practice of asana (poses), while incorporating the science of sequencing and timing.
Clear and safe instructions from the teachers guide one on a steady path for the practice of pranayama (regulation of the breath), leading one to meditative states. Principles of yoga philosophy are inextricably linked to the teachings, bringing the effects of the practice accessible to daily life.
The emphasis in teaching and in practice is on strength, stamina, balance, flexibility and agility through the alignment of the body and precision in movement. Health, well-being, peace of mind and relaxation are benefits achieved through this the study and practice of yoga.
Iyengar yoga is meant for all and is a way of life. The use of props, designed by B.K.S. Iyengar , such as wooden gadgets, belts, ropes helps the practitioner to achieve perfection in any asana. Regular practice of ‘Iyengar Yoga’ definitely integrates the body, mind and emotions.
Iyengar Yoga is the teaching of yoga that is named after B.K.S. Iyengar of Pune, India, who is the author of the classic text ‘Light on Yoga’, and one of the most well-known and influential teachers of our time.
After a 20 years of Iyengar Yoga classes being run by the Peninsula Yoga Centre society at The Mary Winspear Centre, classes will move to the McTavish Academy of Art, 1720 McTavish Road, in January 2024. MAOA like MWC will have our rope wall, a lovely wood floor, good lighting, all the props and plenty of parking. In addition, MAOA has a lounge with coffee and tea, in which to relax after classes.
